Admission Essay for Geophysics Scholarship

Throughout my life, I possessed a keen interest in the field of geosciences. Growing up in Ethiopia has exposed me to the natural and extreme powers of the earth, that it has become my pursuit to be able to acquire knowledge about various phenomenon in order to further understand their intriguing and complex natures. To achieve these objectives, during my undergraduate education I embarked my time in studying geology, building up a foundation of knowledge on the subject that I am passionate about. I graduated as the first ranking student in our class and was awarded with the Getachaw Bolodian Foundation and Belgian Scholarship Awards. At the moment, I am taking my Masters in Science where I choose a degree in Engineering Geology as it is a unique combination that will further boost my ability in both subjects and would nurture the skills I have for my future practice. My propensity for studying engineering geology paid off as I concluded my second year with a GPA of 3.94, and as the first ranking student in all the post graduate students of the science department.

While I do appreciate the many facets of geosciences through the outlined educational undertakings, I feel that I am still not able to live up to my potentials, and there are still many things that I have to learn. Pursuant to this goal, I ardently believe that a higher education in the field of geophysics would not only enable me to showcase my skills as an individual but more importantly, achieve my goal in bringing into the forefront the importance of this field during critical conditions, and be able to lend my expertise in the country where I grew up.

Considering that the study of Geophysics requires strong background in the field, I firmly believe that my work experiences would compliment such objective. I was involved in an investigation work for gold deposits at Sakaro area, 550 km from Addis Ababa and 30km from an existing gold mine area (underground and open pit). The said investigation was successful and the Sakaro area is currently ready for production as an extension to the Legedembi site. I have also worked as a team leader for geophysical surveys for the ground water investigation by electric resistivity in more than 20 areas, including the tomography resistivity investigation for reservoir water tightness investigations of the Tendaho dam area. I have also been a site manager for a 10million dollar foundation grouting work at Tendaho dam which is located in the Afar region of Africa. It should be understood that the Afar region is a complex are as the triple junction of the Red Sea-Gulf of Eden and the East African rift is located.

Hence, the region is characterized by active faults and seismicity which is a great concern for many who are involved in the construction. My responsibilities in this field work is to ensure the safety of engineering structures built within the region through geotechnical and geophysical investigations like tomography resistivity and seismic investigations.

These particular experiences of mine gave me the opportunity to visit various sites and learn that several research works have to be done to understand the dynamics of varying conditions, which is an imperative means to develop probable solutions for construction issues. Likewise, my field experiences have also taught me how to adjust to the environment and people of diverse background, which only proves my dedication to my profession.

As Ethiopia is a poor developing country, there is a dire need for exploration and researches in order to facilitate progress.  In this regard, I want to become a part of this change, which would only be possible if I acquire higher education in the field of geophysics. I know that (name of program) offered by (name of university) compliments my desire in furthering my skills and know-how through the experiential education incorporated within the programs, which will not only advance my career life, but more importantly would pave way for me to be able to contribute for the progress of my country. I know that the university is the right choice for me to embark upon my higher education as optimal results can be expected. In return, I believe that I could give value and significant contributions to the institute through accepting the challenges that would be laid upon me, and by laying strong interest and self-actualization through the rest of my student tenure.
