A billion years after the formation of planet earth, the Archaean era or also known as the Primitive era started. Earth was more cooled down, and global oceans were formed from water vapor in the air. Limestone formed from carbon dioxide rested at the bottom of the ocean. Nitrogen fills most of the air, accompanied by usual clouds and rains. The atmosphere was not very livable due to its toxic contents except for certain single celled organisms.
Cooled lava formed most of the ocean floor but the earths interior still hot and active due to erupting volcanoes. Islands were the only land surfaces which were formed by volcanoes. Movements of rock deep in the earths interior caused the formation of islands. This movement is known as Plate Tectonics. During this, heat is lost from the deep interior of the Earth. Though continents were not formed yet, the islands occasionally will collide and form our continents as we know.
This era is where the first living things on Earth begun. Life during this era were only blue-green algae (simple bacteria) floating on the ocean. Only single celled bacteria lived in this area. The land was lifeless. Mounds in the foreground are called Stromatolites, colonies of photosynthetic bacteria - abundant during Archaean, but declined during the Proterozoic. The bacteria in this era reigned this period up to its end which covered billions of years. Fossil remains of different bacteria were found in Archean rocks during this period. The oldest ever recorded was about 3.5 billion years old.
Activity was pretty much active on the surface of the earth. Few of the rocks during this era survived the natural forces of Mother Nature and in fact, were founded by geologists in present time. Archean era formed the oldest rocks we know of today.
